The Milwaukee Brewers Community Achievers Award presented by Meijer, recognizes residents throughout Wisconsin for displaying extraordinary efforts in their community. This month’s honoree is Tom “Mel’ Stanton.
In 1995, Mel and a group of friends gathered at Cedars Lanes in Cedarburg, Wisconsin to enjoy some good food and watch a little football. About 50 people attended. The group continued to get together each fall. In 1999 everything changed, when a good friend of the group loss his sister to cancer. She was a single mother with a special needs daughter who participated in Special Olympics. The decision was made to hold a raffle during the event in her memory, where they raised $350.
Since then, Mel has created Mel’s Charities and dispersed over 700,000 financial grants to families in need in Ozaukee County. Mel’s Charities’ mission is to have “Great Times for Great Causes in Ozaukee County” and specializes in funding special needs organizations, high school scholarships in memory of individuals who have passed, and human service organizations.
Mel’s Charities has become the well-known name in Ozaukee County for having fun unique events.
Thank you, Mel, for all that you have done for the community!
All adults and school-aged children throughout the state of Wisconsin are eligible to participate in the Community Achievers Award program.
